Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program (WIC)

UCAN provides WIC services in Douglas County. WIC is a nutrition education program that helps pregnant women, new mothers, and young children learn how to eat well and stay healthy.  WIC works to improve the health and nutrition of women and children during critical years of a child's development.

How does WIC help?

  • WIC reduces fetal deaths and infant mortality
  • WIC reduces low birthweight rates and increases the duration of pregnancy
  • WIC improves the growth of nutritionally at-risk infants and children
  • WIC reduces iron deficiency anemia in children
  • Pregnant women in WIC receive prenatal care earlier
  • Children in WIC are more likely to have a regular source of medical care and have more up-to-date immunizations
  • WIC helps get children ready to start school -- children who receive WIC benefits have improved intellectual development
  • WIC improves children's diets

Who is eligible for WIC?

Women and children may be eligible for WIC if they:

  • Live in Oregon
  • Are pregnant, a new mother, or have a baby or child up to age 5
  • Have a nutritional need
  • Meet the income guidelines¬†

  • Information about other health and social services
  • Monthly checks for supplemental nutritious food
